Napa Valley is known for its impressive views, delicious food, bold wines, and unforgettable experiences. Recently opened The Prisoner Wine Company combines everything you think of when you think of Napa Valley and presents it in a new and contemporary setting. It’s become one of the most popular St Helena, CA wineries.
The Prisoner Wine Company is located on Highway 29 just south of St. Helena. The space was inspired by the work of the artist Francisco de Goya, which is depicted on the wine label. SF architect Matt Hollis and Napa artist and designer Richard Von Saal worked together to create a space that feels like you have walked into a “refurbished industrial” space. The dark colors, with pops of red, are the perfect backdrop to taste Prisoner’s cult favorite wines. Make sure to check it out when visiting St Helena, CA wineries!
The Wines
The Prisoner Wine Company was started by winemaker Dave Phinney with an inaugural vintage of 2,000 cases. The wines were immediately sought after by both wine collectors and wine novices alike. Purchased by Constellation Brands in 2016, the brand now produces 85,000 cases a year. It focuses on not just the famous Prisoner Red Blend but also on high-end Cabernet Sauvignon and interesting varieties such as Charbono and Chenin Blanc. You can try these in a classic St Helena Wine Tasting when you visit the winery.
The Makery
The Makery is something unique to Prisoner. The Makery is made of several tiny rooms, each featuring different artists’ creations. The Makery is open to visitors who choose The Makery Experience, as well as to club members at certain times. You are sure to find something unique each time you visit, as the artists are always rotating and changing. One of the most interesting and unique pieces in The Makery is Ash Dancer, by artist Angelio Batle, based in San Francisco. The graphite skeleton, which lies horizontally on a table with paper below it, vibrates, creating a unique sketch each time it is turned on. This truly makes Prisoner one of the most unique St Helena, CA wineries.
