As someone who loves exploring new dining scenes, I was thrilled to discover “Locals Who Lunch,” a refreshing pre-fixe lunch experience in the heart of our vibrant Yountville community. Offered from Wednesday to Sunday, between 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., this culinary treat is designed with the community in mind. At $45 per person, it promised a journey through either valley or coastal-inspired dishes, accompanied by Chef Juan Cabrera’s signature farm salad, dessert and an optional drink pairing. How could I resist?
A Culinary Overview of The Restaurant at North Block
“The Restaurant at North Block” prides itself on capturing the essence of Northern California’s valleys and coastlines. Their menus, which change with the seasons, emphasize ingredients that are not only locally sourced but also showcase the best of what is farmed, fished, and foraged in the area. This commitment not only supports local farmers and artisans but ensures that each dish served is fresh and of the highest quality.
Upon my visit on a bright Thursday afternoon, I was welcomed by an atmosphere that perfectly blended rustic charm with modern elegance, creating a welcoming space. The staff was attentive and friendly, making everyone feel like a cherished guest. They offer the option to sit in their beautiful dining room or catch some fresh air on the cozy patio area, both of which provide the perfect dining environment.
The Culinary Delights
The choice between a valley or coastal-inspired entrée was a delightful dilemma. I opted for the valley entrée, while my companion opted for the coastal entrée. The meal began with the signature farm salad, an exquisite array of fresh, vibrant greens dressed lightly to enhance their natural flavors. When our entrée’s arrived, we were both delighted with the dishes we chose. My Spring Gnocchi with Asparagus, English Peas, Shallots and Oyster Mushrooms was a perfect taste of Spring! My dining companions Tuscan Shrimp Scampi, with White Cannellini Beans, Tomatoes and Lemon Butter sauce was beautifully presented and she agreed it was the perfect lunch entrée.
Beverage Pairing and Dessert
The option to add a cocktail or wine pairing made our leisurely Thursday lunch even more enjoyable. The Shrimp Scampi dish was paired expertly with the Cool as Cucumber Cocktail-made with Cucumber Syrup, Fresh Pineapple Juice, Orange Bitters and was topped with Champagne. My dish was paired with a Crisp 2019 La Chablisienne from France. The restaurant’s vibrant beverage program, showcases classic techniques inspired by the region’s landscape, providing a perfect complement to the meal.
We were delighted by the final course, which was a stunning Lemon Tart made with Lemon Curd, Italian Meringue, Pistachio Crumble, and Ovis Mollie Crust. It was accompanied by crushed Pistachios, fresh blackberries, local honey and mint. While lunch time dessert is not normally on my agenda, I am so glad we decided to indulge, as the Lemon Tart was divine!
