The Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park, located in the heart of Napa Valley, is a must-visit for anyone interested in the state’s unique historical past. Constructed in 1846 by Dr. Edward Turner Bale and Maria Sobranes Vallejo Bale, to mill corn and wheat to support the new pioneers arriving from the East, this fully restored grist mill, is one of only two water-powered grist mills still operating west of the Mississippi. Previously, the land was home to the Wappo Tribe for thousands of years, and it offers an intriguing look into California’s natural history and the marvels of unique pioneer inventions, many of which predated the wine industry for which the region would become famous.
Robert Louis Stevenson State Park is a 5,272-acre undeveloped park that offers trails leading to breathtaking views of Napa, Sonoma, and Lake Counties from the summit of Mount St. Helena. The Sonoma Volcanics erupted from different volcanic centers in the Napa-Sonoma region between 2.6 and 8 million years ago, forming Mount St. Helena and the Palisades, offering some fascinating rock formations in the park and a popular destination for rock climbers.
