Winemaker Rob Lloyd crafts luscious, beautifully balanced California wines for his Lloyd Cellars and Prescription Vineyards labels.
Lloyd Cellars offers a Carneros Chardonnay and Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir, while Prescription Vineyards offers single appellation, single grower wines. The Chardonnay is a partnership with friend and grower James Reamer in Clarksburg, California. The inaugural vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in Alexander Valley, California. The Vineyard is owned by a grower with whom Rob has worked for many years.
FOUNDER & WINEMAKER
After graduating from the University of California, Irvine, with an Economics degree, Rob moved to the Napa Valley, where his mother had recently settled. While she provided the location, it was his father’s love of California Chardonnay that pushed his career in the direction of this classic varietal. Working in the tasting room and harvest nightshift at Cakebread further sparked his interest in the wine business.
After that first harvest, Rob worked in the Tasting Room at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. His interest in wine continued to grow, and he was able to feed this interest by regularly interacting with the winemaking and vineyard staff. These interactions inspired him to go back to school to study enology.
Rob continued to work fulltime in the Tasting Room. He attended the Santa Rosa JC and then Sonoma State to fulfill the required chemistry and biology classes. With these requirements complete, he enrolled in the Master’s program in Enology at the University of California, Davis, while interning with renowned winemakers such as Kent Rasmussen.
After graduating from UC Davis in 1999, he landed a position as Enologist and then Assistant Winemaker at La Crema Winery in Sonoma County. Rob later became the Assistant Winemaker at Napa Valley’s Rombauer Estate from 2001 to 2003, the Associate Winemaker from 2003 to 2006, and Winemaker from 2006 to 2008. Ready to make wines the way he prefers, Rob and his wife Bonnie established Lloyd Cellars and Lloyd Consulting in 2008. In 2009, he co-founded JAM Cellars with Butter Chardonnay. Now, Rob continues to focus on crafting world-class wines for Lloyd Cellars and select consulting partners.
LLOYD CELLARS & PRESCRIPTION VINEYARDS
Bonnie Lloyd grew up in an entrepreneurial family, instilling in her the spirit of creativity and self-determination. At an early age, she developed a passion for fashion, art, animals, and music. By the time she was in high school, she was already working in fashion in different capacities.
After college, Bonnie moved to San Francisco to work in fashion. She also launched her business, Ladies and the Tramp, a dog walking and pet sitting service, which was featured in national commercials. The service had more than 100 clients and also made its own line of dog treats for clients and veterinarians.
In 1996, Bonnie met Rob, reinforcing her love for fine wine and business. On their second date, they started the discussion of what type of wine business they would start together.
Bonnie sold her Ladies and the Tramp business in 1999 and moved from San Francisco to the Napa Valley. As they worked on their wine business planning, she worked for Hanro, a luxury Swiss Lingerie Company, while Rob worked for other wineries. The two of them would joke that they were in the business of sin: wine and lingerie.
Her entrepreneurial wine dreams were realized in 2008, co-founding Lloyd Cellars with Rob, and then co-founding Prescription Vineyards in 2015. Both labels were designed from Bonnie’s fashion influence and background.
